What is TMJ Disorder?
TMJ stands for what is known as the temporomandibular joint. This is the ball and socket joint that connects the lower portion of the jaw with the head. The phrase TMJ frequently refers to a dental problem of this area that is called temporomandibular dysfunction, or TMD. This encompasses a number of disorders in the temporomandibular joint that results in pain in the head and neck area. Problems can include headaches, clicking and popping of the joint, discomfort, pain in the face, eye pain, ear pain and even neck pain. Generally speaking, the temporomandibular joint is considered to be one of the most complex joints due to a number of reasons. These include the fact that it is the only sliding hinge joint in the body, both sides move concurrently, it is weight bearing, dislocation of either or both sides can deliver chronic and intense pain in the head and neck and the positioning of the joints is determined by the position of the teeth.
How is TMJ Treatment Performed?
When you come in for treatment for TMJ, the doctor will first have an X-ray screening done on your mouth. This X-ray is called a tomogram and is used to assess the spatial relationships between the ball and socket portion of the jaw. The doctor will also examine your dental and medical history to find out what might be causing your symptoms. The treatment methods are holistic and vary depending on each patient. There are a variety of options that include Botox, prolotherapy, splint therapy, nutritional and hormonal assessments, assessment of predisposition to TMD and regenerative medicine to repair the TMJ.
