What is TMJ Disorder?
TMJ is a disorder affecting the temporomandibular joint, which is the joint connecting the head with the lower jaw. Symptoms of TMJ include pain in the jaw, especially pain in the joint area; headaches; ear pain; popping of the jaw; blurred vision; and sore, tight neck or jaw muscles.
The cause of TMJ is not completely known. Stress, poor posture in the upper back and neck, and trauma to the jaw are risk factors. Women who are 18 to 44 years old also have increased risk of TMJ.
How is TMJ Treatment Performed?
Treatment for TMJ will vary depending on the cause and the severity of the patient’s symptoms.
An x-ray of each TM joint is taken and the patient’s medical and dental history is reviewed. A clinical exam will evaluate the patient’s teeth and the range of mouth opening, and the muscles of the neck, shoulders and head will be examined.
Treatment will be customized based on the cause of the TMJ and the patient’s needs. Possible treatments may include:
Splint therapy. This technique uses positions a plastic guard over the lower or upper teeth to prevent grinding and clenching.
Trigger point injections. These injections cause relaxation and pain reduction in specific muscle groups.
Nutritional therapy. Appropriate nutritional support can help to decrease muscle tension and pain and can improve the body’s immune response.
Botox®. Injections of Botox® may lower the severity of muscle contractions.
