Sleep Apnea

What Is Sleep Apnea?

Sleep apnea is a potentially dangerous sleep disorder where a person stops breathing multiple times as they sleep. Left untreated, sleep apnea may lead to high blood pressure, leading to a heightened risk of stroke or heart failure. Sleep apnea leads to fatigue which can cause issues in other areas of life, such as at work or school.

Signs of Sleep Apnea

There are various symptoms associated with sleep apnea. If you are experiencing one or more of the following symptoms, please give us a call to schedule a consultation. Dr. Dierkes will determine if you can benefit from sleep apnea treatment. Symptoms include the following:

  • Difficulty sleeping or insomnia
  • Loud snoring
  • Shortness of breath upon waking
  • Snorting and choking sounds as you sleep
  • Extreme drowsiness and falling asleep accidentally throughout the day
  • Headaches after waking in the morning

Orthodontic Treatment for Sleep Apnea

Sleep apnea can be treated in a number of ways. Dr. Dierkes commonly uses sleep appliances as an alternative to treatment using a CPAP machine. Sleep appliances are ideal for treating patients with obstructive sleep apnea and can reposition the mandible to prevent airway obstruction.

Dr. Dierkes also evaluates sleep apnea from a holistic standpoint and performs nutritional and hormonal assessments to determine if the patient could eliminate symptoms through naturopathic treatment.

Why Choose Dr. Dierkes?

Dr. Dierkes is committed to providing patients with a naturopathic approach to orthodontic, TMJ, and facial esthetic treatments. His “All Things Considered” approach to orthodontic treatment carefully considers the relationships among teeth, bone, muscles, TMJ, airway, food allergies, nutritional deficiencies and excesses, and endocrine balances and how each will affect the treatment of the patient.

With a holistic approach to the care he provides, Dr. Dierkes believes in patient education and effective communication which allows each patient to make informed choices about their care and treatment as well as fosters a positive working relationship between doctor and patient. While the naturopathic approach may take more time, the care is better for the patient, and results extend beyond orthodontics and facial esthetics to improve the patient’s overall health.
