Braces have an adjustment period, and you may experience discomfort after your braces are first applied and after some of your appointments, depending on the treatment. This discomfort can be eased with over-the-counter pain medication.

There are some foods that can damage your braces. To prevent damage, avoid eating these foods as often as possible.

• Popcorn
• Corn on the cob
• Whole apples
• Ice

You can still participate in athletics with braces, but some extra care is necessary to protect your braces, mouth, and teeth from damage. Wear a protective mouth guard when playing any sport for your safety.

It is very important that you brush your teeth after every meal or snack as braces have many spaces where food can become trapped, leading to plaque and serious dental problems if ignored. Good oral hygiene is important - make rinsing with mouthwash and flossing a part of your daily routine to ensure your teeth are well maintained throughout your treatment with braces.
