To determine if braces are right for you, schedule a consultation with Dr. Dierkes. He will perform an examination and review your dental issues while addressing any concerns you have.

The length of time each patient must wear braces will vary because everyone’s treatment is unique. It depends on the nature of your treatment, the issues that braces are treating, and even your age. Most patients wear braces approximately 22 months on average, but treatment can be shorter or longer depending on each individual’s treatment plan and results.

Braces have an adjustment period, and you may experience discomfort after your braces are first applied and after some of your appointments, depending on the treatment. This discomfort can be eased with over-the-counter pain medication.

There are some foods that can damage your braces. To prevent damage, avoid eating these foods as often as possible.

  • Hard breads
  • Gum and candy
  • Popcorn
  • Corn on the cob
  • Whole apples
  • Ice

You can still participate in athletics with braces, but some extra care is necessary to protect your braces, mouth, and teeth from damage. Wear a protective mouth guard when playing any sport for your safety.

It is very important that you brush your teeth after every meal or snack as braces have many spaces where food can become trapped, leading to plaque and serious dental problems if ignored. Good oral hygiene is important - make rinsing with mouthwash and flossing a part of your daily routine to ensure your teeth are well maintained throughout your treatment with braces.

Dr. Dierkes is committed to providing patients with a naturopathic approach to orthodontic and TMJ treatments. His “All Things Considered” approach to orthodontic treatment carefully considers the relationships among teeth, bone, muscles, TMJ, airway, food allergies, nutritional deficiencies and excesses, endocrine imbalances, and how each will affect the treatment of the patient.

With a holistic approach to the care he provides, Dr. Dierkes believes in patient education and effective communication which allows each patient to make informed choices about their care and treatment as well as fosters a positive working relationship between doctor and patient. While the naturopathic approach may take more time, the care is better for the patient, and the results extend beyond orthodontics and facial esthetics to improve the patient’s overall health.

The cost of braces will vary based on each individual’s treatment plan. Depending on your dental insurance, you may have coverage for braces. Also, financing is available to help you pay for your braces treatment.
